Biblical Counseling

Pastor George's vision is to see the powerful Truth of the Gospel bring Hope, Renewal, and Recovery to broken and hurting people through God’s redeeming grace.

God's grace is the primary healing force as it is experienced in the counseling relationship. God offers his grace to all mankind by granting even those who do not acknowledge him, the potential for wisdom, goodness, and Truth. Following the example of Jesus Christ, we accept clients wherever they may be in their journey of faith.

Biblical Counseling vs. Secular Psychology: self-centered vs. God-centered

Secular psychology has no place in biblical counseling. Neither does some “Christian counseling,” because some Christian counselors often use secular psychology, not the Bible, as their counseling tool. This is not to say that someone who calls himself a Christian counselor is not also a biblical counselor, but many Christian counselors are Christians who use secular psychology as their primary focus.

Secular psychology is needs-driven and the primary need is self-love. "You" and your self-esteem come before all else. This is a form of idolatry. The Bible says we must die to self.

Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him
--2 Timothy 2:11

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it."
--Matthew 16:24-25

When we love the Lord and others with everything that is in us, there will be no room in our hearts for idolatry.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."
--Matthew 22:37

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
--Deuteronomy 6:5

While secular psychotherapists attempt to help patients find the power to meet their own needs from within, most Christian counselors see Jesus Christ as the healer of the psyche. The patient is urged to realize how much he is loved by God, and the cross is presented as evidence of how valuable he/she is to God. The cross, therefore, exists to boost the patient’s self-esteem and meet his need to be loved.

However, in the Bible, Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God crucified in the place of sinners. The love of God actually demolishes self-esteem and makes searching for it unnecessary. God’s love creates a grateful esteem for Jesus Christ. He loved us and gave His life for us. God is truly worthy of our love.

Sanctification

It's no wonder that many clients of secular psychologists, or some Christian counselors, after many months of therapy still feel so empty and unfulfilled. A lot of time is wasted struggling to fix the past. Not every emotional problem is the result of a lie. Not every traumatic event needs to be brought up and dealt with for a person to experience the love of God and the joy of knowing Him.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
--2 Corinthians 5:17

The goal of Biblical Counseling is not self-esteem, but sanctification. It's your personal quest to grow in godliness and experience true peace through Grace.

Pastor George, "The Cup Of Coffee Counselor"

Shortly after In Your Light was founded, Pastor George had a client who could not afford counseling and refused to take charity. He came up with a compromise. He suggested that the woman go to Wawa on her way to his office and buy a large coffee, light and sweet. He would counsel her until the cup was empty. This payment policy is still in effect. Besides coffee, George has also accepted various homemade baked goods, and a personal favorite, a pan of home baked lasagna.

It has been brought to my attention that "someone" has been tracking down some of my former counselees with the intent of finding out if I have "healed" them. To say the least, I am appalled.

Ministers are not "healers". Jesus Christ our Lord, is our Savior and Healer. God's Grace is a powerful healing force.

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
--James 5:14-15

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
--1 Peter 2:24

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.
--3 John 1:2

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
--Galatians 3:13-14

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
--Acts 10:38

And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.  And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
--Luke 6:17-19

Obviously "someone" has forgotten about the Constitution of the United States of America. The First Amendment grants ALL of us the Freedom of Religion. We are free to worship the God or gods of our choice. We are free to practice our beliefs and also share them freely.

In recent years, Christians have been a popular target. If Christians lose their rights, who is next? Regardless of whether you keep a Kosher home, pray to the great Wolf Spirit, worship Aphrodite or a giant turnip, you have that right.
